Here are (almost) complete compatibility lists for many different systems. Big thanks to Batou for all the work he has put into this!
SD Cards
The R36S has 2 microSD card slots. Users can choose between a 1 card and a 2 card setup (explained in most guides). TF2 slot does not recognize every SD card brand.
Recommended SD card sizes
1 card Setup: 128GB
2 card Setup:
- TF1: 16-32GB
- TF2: 64-128GB
TF SD card slots
- TF1 = OS Card Slot (right) - can store the firmware + roms
- TF2 = Roms Card Slot (left) - only for roms
TF2 Compatibility ⚠️
These are also working in the TF2 slot:
- KODAK UHS-I U3 V30 A1 - 64GB - ✅
- HP mx330 Class 10 U3 - 64GB, 128GB - ✅
- Patriot EP V30 A1 U3 - 128GB - ✅
- Integral UltimaPro V30 A2 U3 INMSDX512G-180/150V30 82-39-24 (Purple card) - 512GB - ✅
There are a lot of fake or bad quality SD cards sold on AliExpress and Amazon. For an in-depth testing of various SD cards you could check The Great MicroSD Card Survey.
Here are a few reliable options picked by the community.
| Image | Link1 | Price | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon |
~10-60€ | Samsung EVO Select 64-512GB | |
| Amazon |
~20€ | Samsung Evo/Pro plus 128GB | |
| Amazon |
~30€ | Samsung Evo/Pro plus 256GB | |
| Amazon |
~10-60€ | Kingston Canvas Select Plus microSD Card 64-512GB | |
| Amazon |
~10-30€ | Netac 32-256GB |
Lots of users also reported cheaper KODAK and HP cards as reliable options. Make sure to check the reviews before ordering one of these.
| Image | Link1 | Price | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| AliExpress | ~5-20€ | KODAK UHS-I U3 V30 A1 32-256GB | |
| AliExpress | ~5€ | KODAK UHS-I U3 V30 A1 64GB | |
| AliExpress | ~5€ | HP mx330 Class 10 U3 64 - AVOID THE 128GB/256GB VERSION! |
Dual SD card guide
Advantages of a dual SD card setup:
- If the OS somehow gets corrupted or defect or if you break something while tinkering, it's easier to replace/re-flashing the cfw. No need to re-copy all the roms/scraped images.
- Your saves/retroarch configs are stored on the roms card. They are safe there in case a update goes wrong or the OS card fails.
- You can easily swap between cards, if you have more than one rom/OS card.
- You can swap rom cards between devices that have different display panels.
